What is Localized Cryotherapy?

Localized Cryotherapy is a treatment designed to target specific body areas to effectively help reduce pain and inflammation, repair tissue damage, aid in post-surgery recovery, enhance blood circulation, and improve skin tone. The treatment, commonly known as cold therapy, involves exposing select body parts to subzero temperatures (-230+ degrees Fahrenheit) using liquid nitrogen for 12-18 minute windows to promote both physiological and cosmetic benefits.

Cosmetic Benefits

Localized cryotherapy, often referred to as “frotox” in the beauty industry, is a treatment in which targeted areas of the body are exposed subzero temperatures for short periods of time. It earned its nickname due to the similar cosmetic benefits to that of botox. It is known to tighten skin pores, reduce acne and inflammation, even out pigmentation, improve blood circulation, increase collagen production, as well as, reduce dark circles and puffiness. The cryogenic treatment involves a controlled beam of vaporized liquid nitrogen to freeze the face, scalp, and neck areas. The cold nitrogen produces an instantaneous tightness in the skin, activating collagen cells and filling in fine lines and wrinkles. The tightening effect from the subzero temperatures reduces the skin’s pore size, in turn preventing toxins, dirt, and grime from infiltrating the skins surface.

Physiological Benefits

Localized cryotherapy is unique in its ability to target and treat specific problem areas on the body. The treatment results in a natural analgesic effect where the targeted areas are stimulated by a rush of oxygenated blood, causing a reduction is muscle tension and promoting microcirculation post treatment. Benefits often include reduced inflammation, swelling, arthritic pain, and migraine symptoms. It was also promotes faster muscle recovery, and is considered to be more powerful and efficient than icing. The treatment is frequently used as an effective mechanism to manage chronic pain and improve joint functions.

Do I have to take a shower either before or after my cryotherapy treatment?

No, showering is not necessary before or after cryotherapy. The entire procedure is dry and does not make your skin wet. Many clients come by during their lunch break since the entire treatment is only 3 minutes long. We can accommodate your specific scheduling request.

What do I wear? Can I keep my makeup on?

You may wear anything you would like to your appointment. Depending on the area of treatment, you may opt to change into a CryoYouth™ robes. Each robe is washed and cleaned thoroughly after every use, so we can ensure the highest level of cleanliness for all our clients. Moreover, cryo facials, unlike most facials, could be performed with make up on. However, we do ask that you do not apply any lotion or moisturizer to your skin an hour before your session or wear any piece of metal (i.e. body piercing) during your session. If client is getting a Whole Body Cryotherapy treatment, it is required that they keep their undergarments (bra, underwear, boxers, etc.) on during the session.

Are Cryotherapy treatments safe?

Absolutely. Nitrogen gas is a non-toxic natural gas. The atmosphere that we breathe is composed of 78% Nitrogen, 20% oxygen and 2% other elements. Nitrogen gas is utilized in Cryotherapy for its stable properties at very low temperatures.

Will I be able to tolerate the cold?

Cooled Nitrogen gas is very dry, so the feeling is not comparable to very cool water — it actually feels less uncomfortable and cold for this reason. The process of Cryotherapy never freezes the skin or soft tissue; the sensation of coldness is what actually drives the systemic response.

Who should NOT use cryotherapy services?

The following conditions are contraindications to Cryotherapy: Pregnancy, severe Hypertension (BP> 180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, severe Raynaud’s Syndrome, fever, tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infection, cold-allergy, acute kidney, have any of implant in area being treated, and urinary tract diseases. Children under 18 must have parental consent and have a parent present during treatment.

How often should I use this service?

You can get a cryotherapy treatment as often as once a day! However, the frequency of your sessions is dependent on what you are using cryotherapy for. Depending on the condition of treatment, it’s recommended to do around 10 treatments in the first month to maximize your results. After that you can take fewer treatments spaced further apart to maintain and improve on your results. For acute injuries, it’s recommended to do 5-7 treatments in the first week, and then taper off to 2-3/week afterwards.
